I spent a hot couple of weeks in New York and Budapest this summer. Not hot in a Paris Hilton sense but a 35°c all day, soak your clothes through within minutes of leaving the hotel sense.
New York was first, both of these trips were to shoot material for the Philharmonia Orchestra's Bartok season The Infernal Dance. We were in New York to stalk Esa Pekka Salonen and visit some of the places Bartok lived and worked while in residence. It seems, by all accounts, he had a pretty wretched time. Sick, poor, dying and eventually dead just a few years after arriving.
The aforementioned heat made shooting this quite a challenge. Carrying camera kit, on foot, all day, at that temperature is not so easy and resulted in: dehydration, sunburn, near disasterous intoxication and a new flavour of body odour. The film however is very good if I do say so myself, I cut the first half, Ana at the Philharmonia cut the second and we reached an agreement over the ending. I think it's my favourite of all the Bartok films and considering we had 3 days in New York for this compared to 6 in Budapest for 8/9/10 films I spose it should be.
The rest of the series should be up soon and i might write some more about them when they arrive.
