FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2010

I've been for a walk. Took the bus up to London Bridge, walked round the back of Borough market, Clink St to Tower Bridge and then on.
That whole area is strange. Past Tower Bridge you walk in-between old warehouses, you can feel the ghosts of industry. It's flooded with tourists, flanked with a combination of fancy restaurants and vaguely upmarket tourist cafes. Up above people live in what I can only imagine are prohibitively expensive loft apartments.
Travelling further east the cafes fall away but the same "redevelopment" continues. Warehouses and dock buildings refitted, gated garages house german cars but nobody walks the street, no noise comes from open windows, no shops, no pubs, no children. Executive boxes.
Pretty suddenly this comes to an end. A building site, the preparations for more executive boxes and then Bermondsey council estates. Millwall and England flags hanging from windows and balconies, a couple mounted on poles from the front of houses. It was quiet here too, no tourists or cafes but some pubs and kids playing. It felt and looked strangely suburban, like I could've been in Basingstoke.
Luckily I wasn't in Basingstoke and I walked back from here, via Old Kent Road Tescos (open 24h 7days a week), through Burgess park, across Walworth/Camberwell Road, through the estate, the park and home.
I took some photos as I walked
