FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2011
It's the second half of 2011. Lot's of music came out this year that I (guy) love. Here is some of it.
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972
This is may favourite. This is probably my album of the year. This could be my album forever. I've listened to it over and over. I can't describe how incredible it feels to me. Please buy it and listen to it now and loud.
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare
Colin Stetson plays the saxophone. Apart from singers on 3 tracks the only thing on this record is Colin Stetson playing a saxophone. The rest is just Colin Stetson playing a saxophone. Colin Stetson plays the saxaphone very well, whilst playing he'll scream, sing, moan and tap on the instrument. As he plays he records on twentysonething microphones. The resulting sound is not that of one man playing the saxophone but is that of Colin Stetson playing the saxophone.
I need to mention that my constant favorite Ben Frost had a hand in the production/mixing/engineering of the above 2 records.
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
I feel stupid writing anything about this. It's a new PJ harvey record.
Wild Beasts - Smother
It's an appropriate title. It's like a warm blanket in the morning. It sounds just right. It fits. You could take it to the beach in the morning or the forest at night.
Elzhi - ELmatic Elzhi is a rapper. He decided to re-make Nas' 1994 debut Illmatic. He did so incredibly well and gave it away for free. I recommend it. Also, interestingly, a few weeks after it's release Nas leaked one of the best songs he's recorded in a decade.
Africa Hi-Tech - 93 Million Miles
Afro-futurism out in space. An album that explores 30 years of dance music and it's influences without ever losing cohesion.
Seun Kuti - From Africa With Fury: Rise
Seun is my favourite child of Fela Kuti. I like that he sticks with the family tradition and makes big, hard, politically charged Afrobeat. If you ever get the chance to see him and the Egypt 80 live you should jump at it (especially if it's not a sit down venue).
